Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a medical condition characterized by a severe deficiency of essential nutrients, particularly protein and calories, that leads to significant weight loss, muscle wasting, and weakened immune system function. SAM is a form of malnutrition that can develop rapidly and has potentially life-threatening consequences, especially in vulnerable populations such as children under the age of five. The clinical features of SAM include visible wasting of muscle and subcutaneous fat, as well as edema (swelling) in the feet, legs, or face.
